Most parks in Singapore have a pond. Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park has a river that can rise three metres in a storm, which is why NParks put warning lights, sirens and safety announcements at eleven points along the bank. In dry weather children cross it on stepping stones. In heavy rain a siren tells everyone to climb above the red high-water markers.
That river used to be a concrete canal. PUB demolished it under the Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters programme and let the Kallang River meander through 62 hectares of parkland instead.
If you are looking for things to do with kids in Bishan and Ang Mo Kio, this guide covers the two towns place by place, plus the nature parks on their western edge. Each entry tells you why your child will like it, what it costs, when it opens and how to get there. Where a place can be booked on Jungle, the link is there.
Ten of the sixteen are free. The three public pools charge 50 cents for a child on a weekday. For the town up the North-South Line, read our guide to things to do with kids in Yishun.

Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park is 62 hectares stretching over 3km, split by Marymount Road into Pond Gardens and River Plains. The Kallang River runs through the middle of it as an open, planted riverbed rather than a canal, and in dry weather children can cross on stepping stones. Smooth-coated otters are recorded here in NParks' biodiversity database, along with more than 90 bird species. There are three playgrounds, a two-hectare landscape pond, a butterfly habitat with over 30 species, two dog runs and a McDonald's inside the park.
Two things to know before you go. The bridge closest to Bishan Park Condominium is closed for improvement works from 16 September to 31 December 2026. The bridge near Dragonfly Pond is closed from 24 August to 4 December 2026. The park entrance at the Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 and Marymount Road junction has been shut since December 2020. Use the newer entrance further along the same road.
Why kids will love it: They can get into the river. Not near it, in it, on the stepping stones with the water running past their ankles, which almost no other park in Singapore allows. Bring a change of clothes and a towel every time, because you will need them whether or not you planned to. Best in the late afternoon when the lawns are in shade.

This is the entry most worth reading twice, because the water playground does not run every day. NParks operates it Thursdays to Sundays and on public holidays, from 8am to 11am and again from 4pm to 8pm. Turn up at noon on a Tuesday and you will find a dry playground and two disappointed children.
The water is channelled from the park's cleansing biotope, a set of engineered wetland cells where living plants strip impurities out of recycled water instead of chemicals. Children work sluice gates to control the flow and watch the water run down slopes, through channels and around obstacles. Foam structures sit around the splash area for climbing and jumping. The park's other two playgrounds, the inclusive playground and the adventure playground, are open 24 hours. The adventure playground has a pirate ship, sand and rubber flooring, a climbing structure and bucket swings for toddlers, and it reopened after an upgrade that ran from December 2025.
Why kids will love it: Opening a gate and watching the water you released chase itself downhill is better than any fixed fountain. Younger children stay in the puddles. Older ones engineer. Come at 8am on a Saturday for the emptiest session, and note the inclusive playground next door has wheelchair-accessible swings and merry-go-rounds with locking mechanisms.

Twenty-one hectares of hilly ground opposite the Ang Mo Kio library on Avenue 6, and the least-visited large park in either town. A 120-step pathway climbs to a hilltop plaza ringed with palms, which is the only place in Ang Mo Kio where a child can look down on the estate. Forest trails run off the main paths. There is a McDonald's with outdoor seating at the edge of the park, which settles the lunch question before it starts.
Be honest with yourself about the state of it. LTA has started work on the North-South Corridor near the park. A section is closed, the pond has been removed, and the footpath through the works has been replaced with an interim path. The rest of the park stays open.
Why kids will love it: The 120 steps are the point. Children who will not walk a flat kilometre will race up a staircase to a plaza with a view, then want to do it again. Wheelchair and pram access covers most of the park but not the forest trails. Good for a 90-minute visit rather than a whole morning.

Five hectares on a low hill directly behind Ang Mo Kio MRT, and a former rubber estate. NParks has kept rubber, nutmeg and cinnamon trees on the site and put up signage explaining what each one gave to Singapore's economy. There is a cacao tree, the fruit of which becomes chocolate, and squirrels that eat it when it ripens. The playground is sand-based.
The access has been cut about. Three staircase entrances fronting Ang Mo Kio MRT and Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 are closed for LTA works, as is the ramp beside Cheng San Community Club. Part of the work finished in 2025 and the rest runs to the fourth quarter of 2029. Check the NParks map for the alternative entrances before you set off with a pram.
Why kids will love it: A chocolate tree in a neighbourhood park is a good enough reason on its own, and the squirrels do the rest. The sand playground suits under-sixes. Because it sits behind the MRT it works as a 30-minute stop between errands rather than a destination.

At the foot of Ang Mo Kio Town Garden West, near Block 159 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5, stands a frame of poles hung with bird cages. The National Heritage Board lists it as a landmark on the Ang Mo Kio Heritage Trail. NHB says the venue can hold more than 1,000 cages and regularly hosts bird singing competitions. Owners start arriving as early as 5.30am and many stay into the afternoon. The club is as much a place for the men to talk as for the birds to sing.
Two honest caveats. NHB's page was last updated in October 2020, and no official source publishes the days, the session times or whether there is any charge. NParks does not mention the club on its page for the town garden next door. Treat it as something to walk past on the way to the park at eight on a Sunday morning rather than a trip in its own right, and you cannot be disappointed.
Why kids will love it: Hundreds of cages at head height, all singing at once, is a strange and completely free thing for a child to stand underneath. It is also the last living piece of a hobby that used to fill every void deck in Singapore. Come early, keep your distance from the cages, and do not let a child poke a finger through the bars.

The old Ang Mo Kio Swimming Complex is gone. In its place, opened on 25 January 2026, is the ActiveSG Sport Park @ Teck Ghee. It has a sheltered multi-generational pool with a jacuzzi and a sensory trail, a water play area, a sheltered futsal court, two multi-sport courts, a 3x3 basketball court and a 1,000 square metre gym. The pool features were developed with the Singapore University of Social Sciences, and the pool has ramp access rather than only ladders.
It also has a calming pod, a low-stimulation room for people with special needs who need somewhere quiet to self-regulate. Sport Singapore says it is the first at a local sporting facility. If you have a child who melts down in a noisy pool hall, that room is the reason to come here rather than Bishan.
One catch that will trip up regulars of the other two pools. This complex closes on Wednesdays, not Thursdays.
Why kids will love it: Sheltered water means a 10am swim in March without the sunburn argument. The water play area handles the under-fives while an older sibling does lengths, and the futsal and basketball courts are 30 seconds from the changing rooms. Arrive before 10am at the weekend.

One competition pool, one teaching pool and one wading pool, on the same block as Bishan Sport Centre and Bishan Stadium. It is a plain pool with no slides and no lazy river. That is exactly why it works for a family with a toddler. The wading pool is shallow, supervised and separate from the lanes, and the whole outing costs less than a bubble tea.
Closed all day every Thursday for maintenance. If Thursday is a public holiday it opens 8am to 9.30pm instead.
Why kids will love it: A wading pool they cannot get out of their depth in, and a competition pool waiting for them when they can. Go on a weekday afternoon in term time and you will have most of it. Bring goggles, because the teaching pool is where most Bishan children learn.

Ang Mo Kio's second pool, at the top of the town beside Yio Chu Kang Stadium, and a 250-metre walk from Yio Chu Kang MRT. Same layout as Bishan: one competition pool, one teaching pool, one wading pool, no water features. It is consistently the quietest of the three, which matters if your child is still nervous in water and needs space rather than a queue.
Closed all day every Thursday.
Why kids will love it: Space. There is no scramble for the wading pool here at 4pm on a Saturday, and a child learning to put their face in the water does better without an audience. Pair it with the stadium track next door if you have an older sibling who wants to run.

Photo: Windsor Nature Park, Jungle listing
Seventy-five hectares of regenerating secondary forest off Venus Drive, and the best first forest for a young child in this part of Singapore. The Squirrel Trail runs along a stream at ground level, then climbs into the Drongo Trail, an elevated boardwalk that reaches 4m above the forest floor. Together they make a 2.2km loop that NParks rates easy and estimates at an hour. If that is too much, the Hanguana Trail is 350m and takes ten minutes.
Because it is all boardwalk, small children are not wading through leaf litter and parents are not worrying about what they are standing on. Car parking is free, 104 lots, open 7am to 7pm with no overnight parking. Pets are not allowed.
Why kids will love it: Walking four metres up in the canopy on a solid boardwalk gives a five-year-old the treetop experience without the TreeTop Walk's 7km approach. Listen for the Greater Racket-tailed Drongo, the bird the trail is named after, which has two long twisted tail feathers. Go early, take water, and expect it to be humid.

Photo: MacRitchie Reservoir Park, Jungle listing
MacRitchie sits at the south-eastern corner of the Central Catchment Nature Reserve, Singapore's largest nature reserve at over 2,000 hectares with more than 20km of trails. Ignore the long routes. The one that works with children is the Prunus Trail: 3km, rated easy, about an hour. It is mostly boardwalk along the water, reservoir on one side and rainforest on the other. Route 2 adds the Chemperai and Jering boardwalks for 4.8km if the first one goes well.
The Paddle Lodge at the eastern end of the park rents kayaks through the Singapore Canoe Federation. Closed-deck and sprint kayaks need a 1 Star certification, so a family turning up on spec is looking at sit-on-top boats. Rates are not published on the federation's own page, so check with them before you plan around it.
Why kids will love it: Long-tailed macaques, monitor lizards and turtles, all visible from a flat boardwalk. The water is right there the whole way, which keeps a six-year-old moving. Do not feed the monkeys and keep food inside a closed bag, because they will take it.

Photo: TreeTop Walk, Jungle listing
Read the next sentence before you add this to a family weekend. NParks states plainly that the TreeTop Walk trail is not suitable for pregnant women, young children, people with a fear of heights or anyone with a pre-existing heart condition. The bridge itself is 250m long and 25m up, connecting the two highest points in MacRitchie. The shortest way to it is a 7km loop rated moderate to difficult that takes three to four hours.
So this is a place for confident walkers of about ten and up, not a stroll. It is also one-way: you cross the bridge in one direction and complete the loop. Start from Venus Drive at Windsor Nature Park for the shorter approach.
Why kids will love it: A child who has walked three hours through rainforest to reach a suspension bridge 25m above the canopy has earned something, and they know it. Over 100 bird species have been recorded along the route, and the lucky ones see a Sunda pangolin or a lesser mousedeer. Take more water than you think you need and start by 8.30am.

Ten hectares of mature secondary rainforest around Singapore's second-oldest reservoir, with a 900m wooden boardwalk through trees more than a hundred years old. This is the gentlest of the three nature options and the shortest, which makes it the one to try first with a four-year-old.
The catch, and it is a real one: the boardwalk is closed for maintenance with completion expected 30 September 2026. NParks asks visitors to use the Casuarina or Jacaranda entrances to reach the rest of the boardwalk during the works. Check the NParks notice before you drive out.
Why kids will love it: White-bellied sea eagles over the water, Malayan water monitors along the bank and long-tailed macaques in the trees, all within 900m. It is short enough that nobody has to be carried back. Casuarina Road at the entrance is where every family stops for prata afterwards.

The building with the sixteen coloured pods sticking out of its side, next to Junction 8. Those pods are reading rooms. They won the President's Design Award for Design of the Year in 2007 for Look Boon Gee of LOOK Architects, then an International Architecture Award in 2009. A child can sit inside a green glass box hanging over Bishan Place and read, which is not something any other library in Singapore offers.
The children's collection is in Basement 1, for readers aged 0 to 12, in English and the mother tongue languages. There is a storytelling and activity area, a programme zone and a cafe, and free storytime sessions run through the year.
One important note for Ang Mo Kio families. Ang Mo Kio Library closed on 1 August 2026 for relocation and NLB has not published a reopening date, though it plans to reopen inside AMK Hub. Until it does, there is a self-service Browse-n-Borrow kiosk and a Sit-n-Read Node on level 4 of AMK Hub, and Bishan is the nearest full library.
Why kids will love it: The pods. Getting to one first is the whole game. Once a seven-year-old is inside a glass box three metres above the street they will stay put with a book far longer than they ever would at home. Basement 1 for under-twelves, level 4 for teenagers. Go on a weekday afternoon, because Saturday morning is busy.

The sports complex on Bishan Street 14 hosted athletics at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games, and the eight-lane track is still there. For a family, the useful part is the sport hall. A badminton court costs $3.50 an hour off-peak at the citizen and permanent resident rate, and a table tennis table costs $1.50. Off-peak is 7am to 6pm on weekdays. That is a rainy Tuesday afternoon sorted for the price of two bus fares.
Be clear about what is not free here, because the internet will tell you otherwise. ActiveSG's Free To Play scheme covers school fields only, and no Bishan or Ang Mo Kio facility is in it. The stadium requires a prior booking for any track and field activity, and ActiveSG publishes no public rate for the track. The stadium opens at 4.30am through a side gate, with the main entrance from 7am.
Why kids will love it: Badminton is the sport every Singaporean child ends up playing, and a proper sprung court beats a corridor. A nine-year-old who has watched the Olympics will want to run on an eight-lane track, so book it or take them to watch a club training session from the gallery. Bring your own racquets and shuttles.

A studio on Upper Thomson Road where the point is to throw the paint rather than apply it. You get a canvas, coveralls, shoe covers, safety glasses and gloves, then squirt, flick and splatter until the hour is up. The starter package is $46 and includes a 40cm by 50cm canvas, 400ml of paint, two syringes and a squirt bottle or a water gun. The weekday happy hour version is $43, runs Monday to Friday from 3pm to 6pm excluding public holidays, and takes its last booking at 5pm.
Sessions run an hour for the single-canvas packages and 90 minutes if you add canvases. A child under six sharing an adult's setup costs an extra $15. Splat publishes no general opening hours on its own site, so book through the website rather than turning up.
Why kids will love it: They are told, by an adult, in a room built for it, to throw paint at a wall. Nothing else on this list gives a seven-year-old that. Wear clothes you have already written off, because the coveralls do not cover everything, and expect the canvas to need a day flat before it travels.

Every family day in Ang Mo Kio ends at Blk 724. It is one of the 123 markets and hawker centres on NEA's register, managed by Ang Mo Kio Town Council. It sits between Ang Mo Kio MRT and Ang Mo Kio Town Garden East, about a 400-metre walk from either. Wet market on one side, cooked food on the other, fans overhead. There are enough stalls that a fussy six-year-old and a parent who wants chilli can both be fed for under $15 between them.
Put 14 and 15 December 2026 in your diary. NEA has the centre closed on those two days for quarterly cleaning. No upgrading works are scheduled for it in the rest of 2026.
Why kids will love it: Choosing. A hawker centre is the only restaurant where a child can walk the whole floor, look at every dish and point. Go before noon or after 1.30pm to get a table, send one adult ahead to claim it, and let the children carry the drinks.
