Things to Do With Kids in Clementi, West Coast and Buona Vista, Singapore (2026)

Clementi has a blue whale with hammocks slung inside its belly, a train modelled on an old KTM carriage, a three-tier bee hive, a gingerbread house and a purple octopus whose tentacles are climbing nets. Every one of them sits at the foot of an ordinary HDB block. Every one is free, open all hours, and has no gate and no ticket counter. Almost nobody outside the estate knows where they are.

The three towns in this guide are covered very unevenly online. Buona Vista has been written up. Clementi and West Coast have not, and the guides that try put the playgrounds on the wrong avenue: three of the four below are commonly listed under a street they are not on. We checked every address against OneMap, and every price and opening time against the body that runs the place. NParks for the parks, ActiveSG for the pool, the National Library Board for the library, the National Heritage Board for the museum, and the operator's own site for everything commercial. Two venues we expected to include turned out to be closed or no longer for families, and they are not in the list.

Ten of the 17 places below are free. One is closed until 2030 and we say so. One pool is half shut this month and we say that too.

Free playgrounds worth a special trip

One of these is a national park. The other four are estate playgrounds at the foot of HDB blocks, with no gate, no counter and no closing time, and almost no shade. Come before 10am or after 5pm, and park at the nearest multi-storey car park.

1. West Coast Park Adventure Playground

NParks calls West Coast Park the "Play Centre of the West" and it earns the name. The park runs to 50 hectares along the shoreline, and the Adventure Playground inside it comprises 8 playsets, including a flying fox, a Viking ship, a toddler play area and an inclusive play area that is wheelchair accessible. There is a large sand pit at the centre of it. A separate nature playgarden nearby is a run of log stumps for balancing, which suits the children who find the big structures too much.

One note before you go. A section of the footpath in Area 1 is closed for repair works until 31 December 2026. The playground itself is unaffected.

Why kids will love it: The flying fox is the draw, and the queue for it is the only queue in the park. After that it is the Viking ship, which children treat as a climbing frame rather than a boat, and then the sand pit, which is where everyone ends up. Bring a change of clothes and a bottle of water. The sand gets everywhere and there is no shade over the play area.

2. Clementi NorthArc playgrounds

Clementi NorthArc is a Build-To-Order precinct on Clementi Avenue 6, Blocks 209 to 212, and the playgrounds scattered through it are the best reason to visit Clementi with a small child. There is a train modelled on an old KTM carriage, with two cabins and a driver's cab full of control panels. There is a blue whale with hammocks slung inside its belly. There is a three-tier bee hive linked by netted tunnel bridges. There is a swing garden with basket swings, and a red climbing structure with cargo tunnels and trampolines set into the ground.

Guides disagree on how many playgrounds are here, so we are not going to print a number. Walk between Blocks 209 and 212 and you will find them all in about fifteen minutes.

Why kids will love it: A four-year-old will go straight into the whale's belly and lie in a hammock, and will not come out for a while. The bee hive suits the six-to-twelve group, because getting to the top tier takes a rope ladder and a netted bridge. The train is the one every child wants a photograph on. Go on a weekday afternoon and you will often have the lot to yourselves.

3. The Candy Trail at Clementi Crest

The playground the whole estate calls Hansel and Gretel is officially The Candy Trail, built for HDB and finished in September 2020. It is at Clementi Crest, Blocks 445 to 445B Clementi Avenue 3, not Clementi Avenue 1 as several guides have it. There are two zones. The Candy Trail has a rainbow candy house, a chocolate-themed slide, spinning apple trees, lollipops, stepping mushrooms and an adventure bridge. The Adventure Forest next to it has two treehouse structures joined by wobbly bridges and rope bridges.

Why kids will love it: The gingerbread house is the thing. Small children treat it as a shop and will play at serving each other for half an hour before anyone touches a slide. The spinning lollipop trees are the second stop. Older siblings will ignore all of it and go straight to the treehouses, which is exactly why the two zones sit side by side. Best for 2 to 8.

4. West Coast ParkView octopus and pirate ship

The newest of the four, finished in March 2024 at the West Coast ParkView precinct, Blocks 801 to 801C West Coast Crescent. The headline structure is a purple octopus whose tentacles carry climbing nets and slides, with a grip-textured climbing membrane on one side and a rope-net bridge crossing to a tube slide. It was designed by the Dutch playground firm Carve, which is why it does not look like anything else in the estate.

A second playground a short walk away has a lighthouse tower with a hammock inside and a slide out of it, a pirate ship with cannons and a spyglass, and sea star, turtle and whale play mounds for toddlers.

Why kids will love it: Climbing to the top of the octopus is a genuine challenge for an eight-year-old and takes a few attempts. Younger children get the pirate ship and the play mounds, which are low and soft. The two playgrounds are close enough that one parent can watch both age groups. There is very little shade, so a morning visit is the sensible one.

5. Firefly Park at Clementi

Firefly Park sits between Block 304 and Block 312B on Clementi Avenue 4. The main playground was refurbished in 2021 and has a green elevated structure with slides, a blue and purple raised walkway with more slides, two trampolines set flush into the ground and a merry-go-round. A second smaller playground sits behind Block 312B. Around them is a 330 metre running track, a basketball court, a performance stage and fitness corners, which makes this the one place in Clementi where a parent can actually run while a child plays.

Why kids will love it: The two in-ground trampolines are the reason children ask to come back, because there is no queue and no supervision needed. The elevated walkway between the two structures turns the whole thing into one long circuit, so a child can loop it twenty times without touching the ground.

Parks and nature within reach

6. Clementi Woods Park

Twelve hectares of mature secondary growth next to West Coast Plaza, with an amphitheatre, a cycling and inline skating track, allotment gardens and a dog-friendly area. It is the shady option when the estate playgrounds are too hot, and it connects to the Ulu Pandan Park Connector if you want a longer ride.

Two closures are live. A section closed for redevelopment on 5 September 2026, and another section has been shut since 15 September 2025, with a marked alternative footpath to reach the allotment gardens and the preschool. Check the NParks page the morning you go.

Why kids will love it: It is the flattest, smoothest loop in this part of Singapore for a child on a balance bike or a scooter, and the tree cover means you can do it at two in the afternoon. The amphitheatre steps are a favourite for eating an ice cream on. There is no playground here, so pair it with West Coast Plaza across the road.

7. City Sprouts West Coast

An urban farm on 40 West Coast Ferry Road, inside West Coast Park itself. It runs 33 greenhouse lots and 41 gardening plots that the community rents, and it hosts a tropical outdoor education centre for children. Entry to walk around costs nothing. Workshops and farm tours are priced separately and change month to month, so check before you build a morning around one.

Why kids will love it: Children who have only ever seen vegetables in a supermarket get to see them in soil, and they are allowed to touch. It is small, which is the point: a three-year-old can cover the whole farm without being carried. Combine it with the Adventure Playground five minutes away and you have a full morning in one car park.

8. Kent Ridge Park and the Canopy Walk

Forty-seven hectares of secondary forest on the ridge above Pasir Panjang, and the reason to bring children is the Canopy Walk: 280 metres of raised boardwalk running through the tree canopy, ending at the Reflections at Bukit Chandu museum. There are two ponds, fitness stations and a lot of birdlife, including Brahminy Kites. Parking is free across four car parks, which is unusual.

Why kids will love it: Walking through the tops of trees at eye level with the birds is a novelty that survives the uphill approach. The boardwalk is enclosed and wheelchair accessible, so a buggy works and a small child cannot fall off. Take the walk first while legs are fresh, then the museum. Bring insect repellent.

9. Labrador Nature Reserve

Twenty-two hectares of coastal forest with a wheelchair-accessible boardwalk, a jetty, and British coastal artillery relics from the Second World War scattered through it. There is a replica of the Dragon's Teeth Gate, a barbecue area and a sandcastle-building area. It is the easiest nature reserve in Singapore to reach with a buggy.

Two closures matter. The Berlayar Creek boardwalk is closed for improvement works from 3 June 2026 until 31 March 2027. The Casemate and the Rocky Shore are closed for safety reasons with no reopening date.

Why kids will love it: Gun emplacements. A seven-year-old who has been told that real soldiers fired real guns from this exact spot will look at the concrete very differently. The coastal boardwalk gives you cargo ships to count, and the sandcastle area means the visit does not have to end in a walk.

Swimming

There is no free water playground in Clementi, West Coast or Buona Vista. We checked. The nearest one is Clusia Cove at Jurong Lake Gardens, about 15 minutes away by car. What these towns do have is a very cheap public pool with a wading pool for toddlers.

10. Clementi Swimming Complex

One competition pool, one teaching pool and one wading pool at 520 Clementi Avenue 3, plus outdoor cardio equipment. ActiveSG classes it as a normal complex, which means no slides and no play features, and that is reflected in the price: a child swims for 50 cents on a weekday.

Two things to know. The teaching pool is closed from 14 September to 26 October 2026, so a child on lessons needs to go elsewhere this month. And Clementi Stadium next door closed on 7 July 2026 for a redevelopment that runs to 2030, which has convinced a lot of families the whole sports centre has shut. It has not. The pool is open.

Why kids will love it: The wading pool is shallow enough for a two-year-old to stand in, and it is separate from the competition pool, so nobody is swimming lengths past your toddler. Come on a weekday morning after 8am and it is nearly empty. Monday is the weekly maintenance day and the whole complex is shut.

Indoor, for a wet afternoon

11. Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum

Singapore's only natural history museum, on the NUS Kent Ridge campus, and the reason to bring a child is standing in the main hall: three diplodocid sauropod skeletons, about 80 per cent original bone, recovered from Wyoming. They are named Prince, Apollonia and Twinky. Around them are 15 zones of Southeast Asian biodiversity, a sperm whale skeleton hung from the ceiling and a taxidermied saltwater crocodile.

Entry runs in three sessions a day, at 10am, 1pm and 4pm, to control numbers. There is no time limit once you are inside. The ticket counter takes NETS or card only, no cash, and wants an identity card for each ticket.

Why kids will love it: A dinosaur the length of a bus, indoors, in air conditioning, fifteen minutes from Clementi. That is the whole pitch and it works on any child between 4 and 12. Allow two hours. Book the 10am session if you have a child who fades after lunch, and go up to the whale gallery before the crowd does.

12. Clementi Library

Clementi Library takes up 1,900 square metres on the fifth floor of The Clementi Mall, directly above the MRT station and the bus interchange, and holds 152,895 books, magazines and audio-visual items across its adult, young people's and children's collections. It was the eleventh NLB library to open inside a shopping mall, and the first anywhere in Singapore to install a digital interactive storytelling kiosk.

Why kids will love it: The storytelling kiosk, and the fact that you can get here from the train without going outside. This is the wet-weather default for the whole estate: a child can spend two hours on the floor with a pile of picture books for nothing, and lunch is three floors down. Check the events listing before you go, because there is regular storytelling in English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil.

13. Wan To Play CandyLand at West Coast Plaza

An indoor playground on the second floor of West Coast Plaza, run by the Wan To Play chain, which has seven outlets in Singapore. This is its only one in the west. The theme is CandyLand, so pastel slides, a ball pit, climbing structures and role-play corners. Worth knowing before you go: the company's own website calls this outlet CandyLand on one page and Babyshark on another, so do not be thrown if the signage does not match the name you went looking for.

Tickets are walk-in only at the moment. Online sales are switched off, so turn up rather than trying to pay in advance.

Why kids will love it: Soft, padded and entirely enclosed, which for a parent of a two-year-old is the whole point: you can sit down. The ball pit and the slides take the first twenty minutes, then the role-play corners take the rest. Two hours is the right ticket for a child over four. One hour is enough for a toddler. Ask at the counter about the sock policy before you take shoes off.

Bigger adventures for older kids

14. Haw Par Villa and Hell's Museum

Haw Par Villa was built in 1937 by the brothers behind Tiger Balm, and it is 8.5 hectares of painted concrete dioramas illustrating Chinese mythology. Inside it sits Hell's Museum, which includes the Ten Courts of Hell, a walk-through of the Chinese Buddhist and Taoist afterlife rendered in graphic detail.

Be clear on two things before you plan a day here. The park has been partially closed for essential maintenance and repair works since 8 December 2025, with no reopening date given, and park admission is currently listed as to be confirmed rather than free. Hell's Museum stays open throughout. And the museum's own advisory says it is not recommended for children under 9, because the Ten Courts contain explicit scenes.

Why kids will love it: An older child who likes being slightly frightened will remember this for years. The Ten Courts are gruesome and completely unlike anything else in Singapore, and a ten-year-old will narrate the punishments to you for the rest of the week. Free highlight tours run at 10.30am, 12.15pm, 1.30pm, 2.45pm and 4.15pm, and registering at the lobby counter is worth it because the mythology needs explaining. Allow two to four hours.

15. Reflections at Bukit Chandu

A small National Heritage Board museum in a colonial bungalow at the top of Pepys Road, telling the story of the Battle of Pasir Panjang in February 1942 and the Malay Regiment company that held Opium Hill against a far larger Japanese force. It reopened in September 2021 after a refresh. There is no car park on site, but Kent Ridge Park's Car Park C is about 100 metres away and free.

Why kids will love it: This is not a museum for a toddler. For a nine-year-old it is the best history lesson in the west of Singapore, because it is about a specific hill you can walk up and a specific group of men who died on it. Pair it with the Canopy Walk, which ends at the museum door. Payment is cashless only.

16. Prawning at ORTO West Coast

Prawning ponds under a covered shelter at 27 West Coast Highway, opposite Haw Par Villa. The Yishun site is gone: ORTO now operates as a single West Coast location, and the prawning is run by Le West Den at #01-13. You hire a rod, sit at the pond and wait. What you catch, the on-site kitchen will cook for you.

A widespread claim online is that the prawning here is open 24 hours. It is not. The operator's own rate card says 10am to 2am.

Why kids will love it: Catching something. It is the only activity in this guide where a child gets to take home a result, and the moment a prawn comes out of the water is worth the hour of waiting that preceded it. Children under about 7 will need an adult holding the rod with them. Book a 2 hour session rather than 1 hour, because the first 30 minutes are spent learning the knack. Bring a towel.

The lunch stop

17. Block 448 Clementi Avenue 3 Market and Food Centre

Every family day out in Clementi ends at a hawker centre, and this is the one in the middle of the estate, a short walk from Clementi Crest and the Avenue 3 playgrounds. It is a combined wet market and cooked food centre, which means the fruit stalls are open in the morning and the cooked food stalls run through lunch. If you are on the West Coast side instead, Ayer Rajah Food Centre at 503 West Coast Drive, Singapore 120503, is the equivalent and is closer to West Coast Park.

Why kids will love it: Fishball noodles for about $4, a sugarcane juice for about $2, and a ceiling fan. More usefully for a parent: a whole table of different dishes means the fussy one gets rice and the other gets something interesting, and nobody has to agree on a restaurant. Go before 12pm or after 1.30pm to get a table with a pram.
