Three guides to this part of Singapore still tell parents to take their children to The Grandstand at Turf City. Turf City closed on 31 December 2023 and is being cleared for housing. Picotin Express and the Bukit Timah Saddle Club went with it. Open Farm Community at Dempsey, the restaurant with the lawn and the garden tour, served its last lunch on 11 January 2026.
So here is a version with the dead entries taken out and the prices checked this month.
Postal sectors 24 to 27 cover Holland Village, Chip Bee Gardens, Ghim Moh, Dempsey Hill, Tanglin, Watten Estate and the lower end of Bukit Timah Road. The defining fact about the area is that the Singapore Botanic Gardens takes up 82 hectares of it, and the Gardens are free. Six of the 18 places below are inside that one park. That is a deliberate choice, because the Gardens are really three separate gated destinations with different hours, different closed days and different prices, and rolling them into one line would hide the fact that five of the six cost nothing.
Two things the district does not have. There is no ActiveSG public pool in sectors 24 to 27, so a cheap swim means Delta or Clementi. There is no NLB branch library either. Everything else, it has in quantity.
Eight of the 18 places are free.

Photo: Singapore Botanic Gardens listing on Jungle
Founded in 1859 and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 4 July 2015, this is the first and only tropical botanic garden on that list. It covers 82 hectares and opens from 5am to midnight, every day of the year, at no charge. The parts children actually use are Swan Lake, where the swans are real and the turtles surface for an audience, Symphony Lake with its island stage, and the Learning Forest at the Tyersall entrance, where a boardwalk runs out over the Keppel Discovery Wetlands at 7am to 7pm.
The Shaw Foundation Symphony Stage hosts free open-air concerts by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra several times a year, usually at 6pm on a Saturday. Bring a mat and arrive an hour early.
Why kids will love it: The turtles at Swan Lake come to the railing, the wetlands boardwalk sits low enough over the water to see fish, and there is enough grass to run flat out without being told to stop. Come before 10am or after 4.30pm. Midday here is brutally hot and the shade is patchy between the lakes.

Four hectares of woodland, streams and play built for children only. Adults are admitted only if they are accompanying a child, which is why it stays calm on a Saturday. The waterplay area reopened after enlargement and now runs to about 500 square metres of mist zones, wading pools and splash features, suitable for ages 2 to 12. Entry is free and the garden takes children up to 14.
One thing to know before you promise it. The Tree House is shut. Termites damaged the wooden structure and NParks expects it back around the end of 2027.
Why kids will love it: A 500 square metre waterplay area that is genuinely free, plus a suspension bridge, a maze and a stream to wade. Bring a change of clothes and a towel, because there is a changing area by the waterplay and every child uses it. Come on a Tuesday. It is closed every Monday unless that Monday is a public holiday.

Photo: COMO Adventure Grove listing on Jungle
The Gallop Extension added 8 hectares to the Gardens when it opened on 13 March 2021, and this is the playground inside it. The structures are copied from real trees in the collection. Children climb the aerial roots of a weeping fig, scramble over the warty skin of a giant cempedak and hop between the pods and seeds of a saga tree. It is nature play rather than steel play, so there are no long slides and no flying fox.
It sits well away from the Tanglin crowds. On a weekday morning you may have it to yourselves.
Why kids will love it: Climbing a tree that has been rebuilt at climbing scale, with rope, timber and sand underfoot instead of rubber matting. Best for ages 2 to 12. There is little shade over the play structures, so 7am to 9.30am is the comfortable window, and the Gallop Road car park is the closest entry.

Atbara, which houses the Forest Discovery Centre. Photo: Fuzheado, Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 3.0
Housed in Atbara, a house built in 1898, this is the free air-conditioned room that saves a Botanic Gardens morning when the rain arrives. The Forest Conservation Gallery covers Singapore's three forest habitats, freshwater swamp, coastal and mangrove, and tropical rainforest, with interactive displays, camera-trap footage of animals filmed at night and recordings of bird calls you can play back.
It is small. Half an hour is enough, and it pairs naturally with COMO Adventure Grove, which is a two minute walk away.
Why kids will love it: The camera-trap videos show real animals caught on film in Singapore forests, and the bird call buttons are the kind of thing a five-year-old will press 40 times. Good for ages 4 and up. Go here first, then let them loose at the Adventure Grove next door.

Photo: SBG Heritage Museum listing on Jungle
Two free galleries at the Tanglin end of the Gardens, both air-conditioned. The Heritage Museum tells the story of the Gardens through objects, including the rubber-tapping work that made Singapore's fortune. The CDL Green Gallery next door is a zero-energy glasshouse running changing exhibitions on plants and conservation.
Watch the closed days, because they are deliberately staggered and easy to get wrong. The museum shuts on the last Monday of the month. The gallery shuts on the last Tuesday.
Why kids will love it: Short, cool and hands-on, with a herringbone rubber-tapping cut they can trace and exhibits at child height. Best for ages 5 and up. Use it as the 20 minute cooling-off stop between the Orchid Garden and lunch, not as the reason for the trip.

The only part of the Botanic Gardens you pay for, and the only part with a Cool House. Over 1,000 orchid species and hybrids are laid out across themed zones, and the Cool House drops to a temperature that makes children stop complaining about the heat within ten seconds of walking in.
Residents pay $5 for an adult ticket. Everyone else pays $15. Children under 12 go free either way, which makes this a cheap outing for a family of four.
Why kids will love it: The Cool House is a proper shock of cold air with mist drifting over the walkways, and the orchid names include ones given to visiting heads of state. Under 12s enter free. Last tickets sell at 6pm, so an hour before closing is the coolest and quietest slot of the day.

Opening hours: 8.30am to 7pm. Last ticket sale and entry 6pm.

Photo: The Artground listing on Jungle
An arts play space for children from birth to 9, run in timed sessions rather than open all day. The current installation, WonderGround, opened on 19 April 2026 and runs to 31 March 2027. It is sensory and slow rather than loud, which suits toddlers and frustrates a nine-year-old after 40 minutes.
Book ahead. Walk-ins get in only if a slot has space, and the space closes to the public when a school excursion is in on a weekday morning.
Why kids will love it: A soft underground world to crawl through with textures to press and rooms that change under their feet, no shoes and no queueing. Best for ages 1 to 6. Sessions are roughly 75 minutes, so book the 9.15am slot at a weekend and go to Holland Village Market afterwards.

Photo: buds by Shangri-La listing on Jungle
The largest paid play space in this part of Singapore at 1,872 square metres, of which 572 are indoors and 1,300 are outdoors. The outdoor half includes a water play area, which matters because the district has no public pool. Admission is sold as a three hour session, morning or afternoon, not by the hour.
It is not cheap. At $83 nett per child on a Saturday, two children cost $166 before anyone eats.
Why kids will love it: Three hours is long enough to do the indoor climbing structure, the outdoor water play and the craft table without being rushed off anything. Best for ages 1 to 12. Book the 9am session, bring swimwear and a towel, and note that children under 4 must have an adult with them the whole time.

An indoor play club on the third floor of Tanglin Mall, with a ball pit, a trampoline, obstacle courses, sensory play and a mini train that each paying child gets one ride on. Entry is $35 per child and covers up to two accompanying adults. A third adult is $10.
There is a second branch at Cluny Court, 501 Bukit Timah Road, which is smaller and closer to the Botanic Gardens.
Why kids will love it: The train ride is the draw, and the obstacle course is built for the wobbly end of toddlerhood rather than for school-age daredevils. Best for ages 1 to 8. Go on a weekday afternoon when the mall is quiet, and check the hours by phone first.

Photo: Museum of Ice Cream listing on Jungle
Thirteen themed rooms at Dempsey with unlimited ice cream included in the ticket, ending in a sprinkle pool. It is built for photographs, and it works on exactly that basis. Tickets start at $43 and the premium ticket starts at $53. Children aged 2 and under go free, and under 12s must have an adult with them.
Pre-booking is required. Turning up at the door is not a plan.
Why kids will love it: Unlimited ice cream is the whole pitch, and the sprinkle pool at the end is the thing they will describe to their grandmother that evening. Best for ages 4 and up. Allow 90 minutes, go on a weekday, and feed them lunch first so the ice cream is not the meal.

Photo: Heppi Pottery and Goods listing on Jungle
A pottery studio on the second floor of Coronation Plaza that takes walk-in painters of any age. The studio fee is $22 per child and the blank ceramic pieces start at $10 depending on size, so a session lands at around $32 to $45 a child. If they want to work with wet clay instead, the handbuilding trial is $65 for ages 6 and up, or $175 for three sessions.
It is closed on Mondays and does not open until noon on weekdays, which catches people out.
Why kids will love it: Choosing a blank animal or mug and painting it badly, then coming back a week later to collect a real glazed object that came out of a kiln. Painting suits any age from about 3. Wet clay needs 6 and up. Book the weekend 9am slot, because the studio is small and fills.

Ages: Painting all ages. Handbuilding 6 and up.
Nearest MRT: Botanic Gardens (CC19/DT9) then bus, or Tan Kah Kee (DT8).

Photo: ves.studio listing on Jungle
A working ceramics studio in a Chip Bee Gardens shophouse, on the quiet street behind Holland Village. It runs adult courses as its main business, from $360 for a four to eight week handbuilding block up to $800 for ten wheel-throwing classes, and it runs children's workshops alongside them. The children's sessions are not priced on the website, so ask.
The appeal here is that it is a real studio with real work drying on the shelves, not a craft counter in a mall.
Why kids will love it: A pottery wheel spinning in front of them, in a room that smells of wet clay, with finished work on every shelf to aim at. Best for ages 6 and up, since the wheel needs some patience. Combine it with lunch on Jalan Merah Saga, which is 200 metres away.

Photo: The Yard listing on Jungle
A gymnastics gym in the Dempsey barracks with sprung floors and full-height equipment. The programmes run by age: Gymtots from 18 months to 3, Kindertots and Ninja Tots from 3 to 4, then Fundamentals, Ninja White and Warriors from 5 to 11, with development squads above that for children who want to compete.
Jungle's listing describes trampoline and parkour. The Dempsey branch's own timetable is recreational gymnastics and ninja classes, so go by the timetable.
Why kids will love it: Bars, beams, a foam pit and a ninja course they are allowed to fall off, supervised by coaches who let them try the hard thing. Best for ages 18 months to 11. Weekend slots close at 3.30pm and the gym shuts on public holidays, so plan a Saturday morning.

Getting there: Buses 7, 75, 77, 105, 106, 123 and 174 along Holland Road.
Four heated, salt-chlorinated pools in the same Loewen Road block as The Yard, taking babies from four months. Group classes cap at five children and run 30 minutes. This is the closest thing the district has to a pool, given there is no ActiveSG centre in sectors 24 to 27.
Prices are published, which is rare for swim schools. Weekday group classes are $40 and weekend group classes $46. A one-off ad-hoc class is $60 on a weekday and $70 at a weekend. Private lessons are $85 and $90. All figures exclude 9% GST.
Why kids will love it: Warm salt water instead of a cold chlorinated public pool, and a class of five rather than fifteen. Suits four months to about 12. Book the ad-hoc single class first at $60 to see whether your child takes to it before committing to a term.

A former British army barracks turned into a low-rise estate of restaurants, galleries and shops, spread over a wooded hill with no mall and no crowds pushing past. Wandering it costs nothing and parking across the estate is free, which is close to unheard of in this part of Singapore. A free shuttle runs from Wheelock Place, both Botanic Gardens gates and Holland Village MRT.
Open Farm Community, the restaurant with the vegetable garden and the lawn, closed permanently on 11 January 2026 after 11 years. Several guides still send families there.
Why kids will love it: Room to run between the old barrack blocks, dogs everywhere because the estate is dog-friendly, and lawns nobody tells them to keep off. Suits any age. Arrive before 10am at a weekend for a parking space near Dempsey Road, and pair it with The Yard or the Museum of Ice Cream in the same block.

Holland Village is two streets and a food centre, which is exactly why it works with small children. Lorong Mambong is the restaurant row, Holland Avenue has the shops, and One Holland Village at the MRT end has a small garden play area with swings and spring seats near the ground floor shops.
Cross Holland Avenue into Chip Bee Gardens and the noise drops. Jalan Merah Saga and Jalan Kelabu Asap are two-storey 1960s shophouses and low bungalows holding cafes, an art gallery and ves.studio. It is flat, shaded and about a 20 minute loop at toddler pace.
Why kids will love it: Swings at One Holland Village, then a quiet street of coloured shophouses where a scooter is actually usable. Suits any age. Do the loop at 4pm when it cools, finish on Jalan Merah Saga for an early dinner, and skip Lorong Mambong after 7pm when it turns into a drinking street.

Ulu Pandan Park Connector. Photo: Wzhkevin, Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0
A 14.8 kilometre paved connector running along both banks of Sungei Ulu Pandan, between Commonwealth Avenue West and Bukit Batok East Avenue 2. The Ghim Moh and Holland Grove entrances put you on a flat, traffic-free stretch that is the best beginner cycling route in the district. Lighting runs from 7pm to 7am, so an evening ride is safe.
There is no shade for long stretches and no water point, which is the honest limitation. Go early or go late.
Why kids will love it: A long flat path with no cars, no kerbs and no need to stop, which is where a child on a first pedal bike finally lets go of the brakes. Suits ages 4 and up. Enter from Ghim Moh Road, ride towards Clementi, and turn back at 20 minutes so the return leg is not a negotiation.

Twenty-one cooked food stalls and 48 market stalls at the corner of Lorong Mambong, reopened after a renovation that brought new tables and better ventilation. It is the cheapest meal within walking distance of Holland Village MRT, and it is where you take a family after a morning at the Botanic Gardens without spending Dempsey prices.
Stall hours vary and that is the catch. Most open around 6am, several of the best sell out by early afternoon, and only a handful run through to 9.30pm. Come at 11.30am and everything is open.
Why kids will love it: Rice, noodles, fried bee hoon and a sugarcane juice, chosen by pointing, served in four minutes, for a fraction of what the restaurants 100 metres away charge. Suits any age. Arrive by 11.30am for the full spread, and note that a few stalls close on Mondays and Wednesdays.
